Richard: I think it's true that the whole notion of publishing needs to be looked at, maybe have the rug taken out and shook. All I know is that there are a lot of good writers out there not even being looked at because they don't follow whatever the current hot trend is. As I said in an earlier reply to someone: an artist can make prints of their work and sell them and it's okay; same with a musician or a film maker. But call a writer an “independent writer” who believes enough in their work to refuse to have a faceless someone tell their work “Nope, sorry,” have them go the self-publishing route, and they're not considered legitimate. WTH?

The fledgling independent writer as usual is too eager to have their work out in the wild for everyone to admire
. They give little thought to what makes a professionally edited manuscript shine. Their mistake (which make reviews/writers claim that 99% of all self-published work is worthless) is unfortunate not only for them but to all self-published writers. However, if the work is good it doesn't necessarily mean it will become well known. By taking the self-published route, it means that writer is putting on more hats than just the writing one. That writer must but responsible for making sure the book is well edited (not necessarily edit it herself), printed, marketed, and all the little details in between. A daunting job if you consider all the skills involved. As with everything else, experience comes from mistakes, but a little education can shorten the learning curve. Fortunately there are many writers in the web chronicling their experiences.
Now for the traditional published junk… well that's just greed that makes those poorly written/editor books hit the selves. Some will be blockbusters now, but will in time fade. The traditional published industry is in chaos, unable to figure out the changing publishing landscape. Too bad for them. It's a wait and see game. For those “fortunate” writers that go the traditional route… I don't think they have it any easier.

I think major publishers will still react very slowly. They worry about losing control of the medium/content by having it distributed electronically (and possibly pirated). What they don't understand is that making it as easy as possible to get the content you want is the only way to increase (or at least maintain) sales and deter piracy.
This leaves a hole where independent writer can try to self publish themselves through electronic means. This would require additional investment through advertising by the independent writer (think Google Adwords for advertising about you title with links to e-bookstores) among other marketing strategies, like blogs/portals for independent writers to gather, partnerships with sympathetic, higher traffic websites for referrals, etc.
Another thing to consider is Google's idea of an HTML e-reader where you log in to read the content (think of a Google Docs application where the “docs” are books). If you can access your “books” through any device that has HTML/Web browsing and internet connectivity, this opens up “e-reading” to almost any cellphone, and a much better experience on all those big screen smartphones out there, along with laptop, etc.
