I've been closely following the recent earthquakes and microquakes in the southern california area. If you view the maps on the usgs.gov website, you'll notice that there is a large area of the San Andreas Fault area that has not had any appreciable quakes in the last week to ten days. I'm referring to the area from just south east of Bakersfield, to near Pasa Robles to SE of Bakerfield. I would have to think that there is immense pressure building up in that area, and would not be surprised if we didn't have a large slip in that area in the near future.

One irritating aspect of Athens GA on a Sunday is that it is hard to find a plain meat and vegetables lunch without having to go to a chain like Ryan’s or The Cracker Barrel. I have to say, both of those choices are pretty depressing. And, don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of nice places to eat in Athens, but they generally are not into Southern cooking the way your grandmother would have done it. I suppose that college kids aren’t that interested these days in southern cuisine. In any event, we get frustrated on Sundays when we want a place to have lunch.
On regular, recent trips to South Carolina, we go through the nearby town of Danielsville, GA and noticed a homey looking place called <em>Gina Bell’s Restaurant</em>. With leaves making their fall color change, it didn’t seem too bad an idea to drive 20 miles to Danielsville and give <strong><a href="http://www.merchantcircle.com/busines..."><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Gina Bell’s Restaurant</span></a></strong> a try.
For certain, Danielsville could use a nice place to eat. The current most popular places appear to be Hardee’s and Subway. Gina Bell’s Restaurant looked like a nice hometown place to have in a town that small.
Although very simple, the restaurant had been decorated nicely from how I recall the building appearing before. Obviously it had a feminine touch, so there must really be a Gina Bell. As we walked in were greeted very nicely by several women working behind a serving line. I assume they always do things cafeteria style, which is no problem to me. I like seeing everything before choosing.
Surprise, surprise….I went for the fried chicken. Bobbie tackled the meatloaf, squash casserole and green beans, and some iced tea. Just what we had been looking for for a Sunday lunch.
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Gina Bell’s Restaurant – The Good And The Bad</h2>
The good news was that the meat loaf was very good. The fried chicken was pretty good, but not as tasty as Roy’s in Anderson SC and definitely not as good as that served at the Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle, GA. But our two meals together cost less than one meal there where they charge $20 for Sunday lunch, and you have to fight your way around tour buses of people coming for the experience. (It is worth a try).
The bad news is that the vegetables, although the squash casserole was good, were just ho-hum. The main problem being the green beans and turnip greens were obviously canned. This made the lunch just a pretty ordinary event.
They did have a unique tasty item, cheese biscuits. Those are worth trying. And….the iced tea was good and strong.
<h3 style="text-align: center;">Gina Bell’s Restaurant Danielsville GA – The Verdict</h3>
Would I suggest you drive 20+ miles to eat at Gina Bell’s, probably not. Would I go again? Well, if I find myself in the area, or just have another Sunday being frustrated that I can’t find this sort of food in Athens, well who know…..I probably would. It is not too bad to drop the top of the roadster and head out in the country. If you live in Danielsville, GA, I sure hope you support Gina Bells……they seem like hard working nice people.
Side note: If you like this type of food, you will be sorry to hear that after 30 years Wilson’s Soul Food in downtown Athens had to close their doors. It just seems, like I said earlier, college students just like southern cooking anymore. What a shame to see them go, and thanks for all those years of serving good food.
